MASTER COCKTAIL

THE CLASSIC NEGRONI

Negroni

Anyone who has looked at my Instagram channel knows I love Negronis.

They are a cocktail made from equal measures of gin, red vermouth and campari. Stir all three (typically one shot of each) in a mixing glass full of ice for about 20 seconds and then strain into an old fashioned glass with a big hunk of ice, get some orange peel, twist it to express the oils and drop it in there and you’re ready to drink!

It’s are a boozy cocktail for sure, and in my opinion the stirring is essential to take the edge off the alcoholic content.

Regardless of the preparation method quality ingredients are vital, everyone usually uses Campari and mostly a decent Gin but a lot of people stuff up the vermouth.

VERmouth tips

keep it fresh

Unless you run a bar you're not getting through it quickly so you need to keep it in the fridge and don't keep it for longer than roughly six weeks.  I know that makes it difficult to get through it so feel free to keep tasting it and use it for as long as you like but try to remember it will degrade much faster than other spirits.

Use good stuff

I am a fan of Dolin and Olave, try a few and see what works and if you love Cinzano or martini then use them.

Variations

OFFICIALLY

There are a lot of official variants.  This site says it best:

My variations

Full disclosure I am sure I didn’t invent these myself, it's likely I read about them or saw video on them somewhere!

Gin Forward Negroni

I make a gin forward Negroni often, because I am a fan of Gin.  Just use 1.5 shots of gin instead of one.

Negroni Coffee Swap

I also swap the vermouth out for other Ingredients including Sherry and Coffee liqueur and there are a lot of coffee based variants including dropping the gin for coffee liqueur (not my fave way to go because I love the gin).

Negroni Amaro Swap

You can drop the campari and substitute in different Amaro's (there are so many local ones) so try that too.  I love the Beechworth a walk in the black forest amaro.
